Simultaneous 5-Axis Vs 3+2 Machining
Both methods offer multi-axis machining flexibility, but differ in tool movement, programming complexity, and production cost. Choosing the right approach depends on your part design and manufacturing requirements.
![]() Simultaneous 5-Axis Machining All five axes can move together during machining. As the tool follows the programmed path, the rotary and linear axes continuously coordinate to change the cutting position and orientation. This allows the machine to follow complex surfaces and contours without repeatedly stopping to reposition the workpiece. | ![]() 3+2 Axis Machining All five axes can move together during machining. As the tool follows the programmed path, the rotary and linear axes continuously coordinate to change the cutting position and orientation. This allows the machine to follow complex surfaces and contours without repeatedly stopping to reposition the workpiece. | |
|---|---|---|
| Tool Movement | Continuous multi-axis motion | Fixed indexed orientation during cutting |
| Programming | More complex | Generally simpler |
| Setup Strategy | Continuous orientation changes | Multiple indexed positions |
| Cost Consideration | Higher programming demands | Often more economical for suitable parts |
Technically, adding two more axes to a traditional 3-axis setup results in a machine with five axes, but the 3+2 axis is not truly equivalent to a 5-axis machine. Choose Your Machining Solution
Types of 5 Axis CNC Machine Configurations
5-axis CNC machines use different rotary-axis configurations depending on part size, geometry, tool access, and machining requirements. Two common designs are trunnion-style and swivel-head configurations.
![]() Trunnion-Style 5-Axis Machine | ![]() Swivel-Rotate-Style 5-Axis Machine | |
|---|---|---|
| Workpiece Movement | Rotary table tilts and rotates the workpiece during positioning and machining. | Workpiece remains more stable while the spindle tilts or rotates around the part. |
| Axis Configuration | Typically combines tilting and rotary table axes. | Typically combines a tilting spindle head with a rotary axis. |
| Tool Access | Strong access to multiple sides of small and medium-sized parts. | Greater flexibility around large, deep, or irregular components. |
| Tool Length | Longer tools may be required for some deep or restricted features. | Flexible spindle orientation can allow shorter and more rigid cutting tools. |
| Part Type | Best for small to medium complex precision parts and freeform surfaces. | Better for larger, heavier, or irregularly shaped parts and housings. |
| Typical Applications | Medical, aerospace, mold making, precision components. | Aerospace structures, automotive, energy equipment, large housings. |

Materials for 5-Axis CNC Machining
SinoRise machines a range of metals for custom 5-axis CNC parts, including aluminum, stainless steel, carbon and alloy steel, titanium, brass, and copper. Material selection depends on mechanical properties, machinability, functional requirements, and finishing needs.
- Aluminum
- Stainless Steel
- Carbon & Alloy Steel
- Titanium
- Brass
- Copper
Aluminum 6061 and 7075 combine low weight with good machinability, making them suitable for precision housings, frames, and structural parts. Thin sections require attention to clamping and deformation.
Common Grades: 6061, 7075, 2024
Stainless steel is selected for components requiring strength and corrosion resistance. Grades such as 304 and 316 need suitable cutting conditions to manage heat, work hardening, and tool wear.
Common Grades: 303, 304, 316, 17-4 PH
Carbon and alloy steels offer strength and rigidity for load-bearing mechanical components. Machining requirements vary with material hardness, and heat treatment should be considered when planning final dimensions.
Common Grades: 1018, 1045, 4140, D2
Titanium alloys provide a high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Their low thermal conductivity makes cutting temperature and tool wear important considerations during machining.
Common Grades: Grade 2, Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V)
Brass offers good machinability and an attractive surface finish for precision fittings, connectors, and instrument components. Different grades should be selected according to machining and functional needs.
Common Grades: C360, C260
Copper is valued for electrical and thermal conductivity in functional components. Its ductility requires careful tool selection and burr control, particularly around small features and edges.
Common Grades: C110, C101

5-Axis CNC Machining Design Guidelines
Follow practical design guidelines for feature sizes, tolerances, holes, and threads to improve machinability, reduce production costs, and ensure reliable results for complex precision parts.
| Design Feature | Design Guidelines |
|---|---|
| Minimum Feature Size | Keep feature widths or depths at least 0.5 mm where possible. Smaller details require evaluation of material strength and tool accessibility. |
| Minimum Slot Width | Tolerances as tight as ±0.005 mm may be achievable for suitable features, subject to engineering review. |
| Hole Diameter | Metals: ≥ 0.8 mm (0.031 in); Plastics: ≥ 1.0 mm (0.039 in) |
| Shaft Diameter | Use radii/fillets on internal corners to reduce stress and improve machinability |
| Threads & Tapped Holes | Thread sizes from M2 to M24 are supported. Allow sufficient thread engagement and clearance at the bottom of blind holes. |
| Engraved Text | Use a minimum text height of 1.5 mm and an engraving depth of 0.5 mm for clear, readable markings. |
| Internal Corner Radii | Add suitable internal radii to accommodate cutting tools and avoid unnecessary machining difficulty. |
| Deep Pocket Design | Consider pocket depth, cutter reach, and wall clearance to minimize tool deflection and machining difficulty. |

5-Axis CNC Machining FAQs
We apply ISO 2768-f general tolerances where specified and applicable. For suitable critical features, tolerances as tight as ±0.002 mm may be achievable, depending on material, geometry, and inspection conditions. Specific requirements are confirmed through engineering review.
Yes. SinoRise supports prototypes and low-to-medium volume production. Whether you need a sample for design validation or a repeat production order, we evaluate the quantity, material, and machining requirements to provide a suitable quotation.
Pricing depends on part complexity, material, machining time, tolerances, surface finishing, and order quantity. Five-axis machining may reduce setup and fixture costs for certain parts, but it is not always the lowest-cost option. Send us your drawings for a project-specific quote.
Standard projects may be completed in as little as 2–3 days, while many qualifying orders can be delivered within 3–7 days. Complex parts may require up to two weeks or longer, depending on material availability, machining requirements, finishing, and quantity.
Our ISO 9001-certified quality management system supports controlled manufacturing and inspection processes. Depending on part requirements, CMM and other measuring instruments are used to verify critical dimensions and geometric features against approved drawings.
Please provide a 3D CAD model, technical drawings, material grade, quantity, critical tolerances, surface finish, and expected delivery date. STEP or IGES files are preferred for geometry review, while 2D drawings help clarify dimensions and inspection requirements.
